I'm a 47 year old woman who recently went through my fourth lay off. Although I have 15 years of experience as an administrative assistant, my recent position was as a Data Entry Specialist within clinical research that I had really enjoyed.
Seeing how it took me 15 years to finally get to this position and knowing that administrative jobs are rarely the stepping stone positions that they are advertised to be, I was in the market for a similar data entry type position rather than falling backwards once again to a front desk. Obtaining a new position is very difficult these days with everything being through LinkedIn (basically Facebook for job seekers), so I decided to reach out to Randstad to see if they could assist. I submitted my information and resume on November 28, 2023. It didn't take long for the first, low paying call center job to be thrown at me.
I thanked the recruiter for the opportunity and politely explained that I was not interested in call center or administrative type positions and asked to be considered for any data entry specialist positions that became available. Three days later, I get another email from a different recruiter, asking if I was interested in a receptionist position. Again, I responded politely and repeated what I said in the previous email. One day later, three separate emails are sent out, slinging more customer service positions.
I didn't bother responding to those. Four days later, received information about a collections agent position. Again, didn't bother responding and beginning to get a little frustrated as no one seemed to be listening to me. Five days later - received another offer for a front desk position.
Once again, I thanked the person for the notification and AGAIN explained that I was only interested in data entry specialist position. I added that, if this was something that Randstad would be unable to assist me with, I completely understand. I assumed that was the case because I didn't receive any communication from Randstad for over a month.
Suddenly, a month and a half later, I received an automatically generated email from Randstand, listing the available positions they had. They were all administrative and receptionist positions so, needless to say, I was not interested.
Two days later, I get another email and, long and behold, a position was listed for a Data Entry Specialist with a surgical supply company and the salary listed was exactly what I had been making at my previous job. I immediately expressed my interest that night (Thursday) and received an invite (Friday) for a phone screening with Randstad the following Monday.
Monday came and, after going through the initial meet and greet process, I inquired about the Data Entry Specialist position and was told by the recruiter "oh, that job has already been filled and you're overqualified for it anyway". Very nice for Randstad to send me notification about a job that wasn't even available and, based on the email timeline, I highly doubt that the position was posted between January 29th and February 1st, interviews took place and a hiring decision was already made in three business days. I didn't say anything because, at this point, I had been out of work for almost five months and the bank account was beginning to drain.
I finish the phone call and heade out to the post office. Within 10 minutes of completing the call, I receive a phone call from a Randstad recruiter - would I consider an administrative assistant position? For the love of God - no, no, no, no, no.
A couple of days later, the recruiter I had the call with reached out to confirm that I wasn't interested in administrative assistant positions. I can't image what led her to that conclusion.
Not to mention, how I am over qualified for that data entry position, but not over qualified to go back to answering phones, ordering food and managing office supplies?
A few days later, another call was scheduled with different recruiters, but it was just another meet and greet type call. Which was fine - the more I had on my side, the merrier.
Now I will say that the main person I wound up working with was very nice. I truly believe she had my best interests at heart. Unfortunately, being out of work for five months was putting me in a desperate situation, not to mention wasting weeks of my time trying to convince Randstad in the beginning that I wasn't interested in call center or receptionist jobs may have cost me better opportunities.
The first position brought to my attention was a three month long temporary position with a dermatologist office.
This wasn't necessarily a bad thing as I would have gained good experience. Unfortunately, I am a near 50 year old woman and not a 22 year old kid looking to break into the working world. I explained that I loved the sound of the job, but that I couldn't afford to bounce around in temp positions anymore, being in limbo and no longer being eligible for better, permanent positions that Randstad receives seeing how I would be committed to finishing the temp assignment. And, believe me, the better opportunities ALWAYS suddenly materialize while committed to a temp assignment.
The recruiter did understand where I was coming from. Like I said, I do think she was great. Unfortunately, she got me at a desperate time.
Finally, a permanent data entry specialist position becomes available. It involved a pay cut - a very large pay cut for my salary history, but at that point, my bank account was continuing to drain and I had already sent out over 200 resumes.
I needed something and accepted the pay cut. I was hired and I sat around for two weeks for the job to start.
On my second day at the job, I learned that it wasn't only a huge pay cut I was taking. I've seen a better benefits package at a retail store. Whereas most companies today offer two to three weeks vacation from the start, this company made you wait six months to just get five days.
Then you only earn one day a year, so it will take you five years just to get too two weeks. Believe me - this was not about my inner need to jet off to Europe as soon as possible. This was about me emailing my aging father up north and letting him know that he will not see his daughter for six months. It was also about people who will be forced to come into work, sick as dogs, because you're given so little time to take off when you need to.
One would think companies would have learned the lesson after Covid, but apparently not this place. I doubt there was even a 401k. If there was one, it wasn't brought to my attention during the orientation. Other basic benefits also seemed to be missing.
It sounded like the last hire had been a "problem employee" and the company wanted to be sure not to make the same mistake.
Well, that wasn't recent. That was over four years ago. So, not the most recent hire and certainly not something that I should be suspected off. But, it did seem to be come my cross to bear.
I also found out that nine people had been through this position in the last six years. Well, they all couldn't have been wrong and that was a huge red flag. But, this wasn't brought to my attention before I accepted the position nor was the lousy benefits package (if that's what you want to call it). They claimed to have sent a welcome letter.
I won't say that they're lying, but I will say that I never received it. Heck, I started working without confirmation of what the salary was.
Sadly, knowing that there was no future with this company and that it would prove only to be a daily reminder of my former company laying me off so the CEO could make more money, I didn't return after the second day. It was just too great of a loss. I was willing to take the hit in pay, but the hit in life/work balance was way too much.
As I saw it, why make this company continue to train me when I knew that my only goal was to find a new job?
I'm sure Randstad will never offer me another opportunity due to the fact that I walked out. I will not fight this, but I wonder what would have happened if A) Randstad did not waste my time sending me the call center and receptionist jobs which I told them ad nauseum I wasn't interested in, B) if the company that hired me didn't hide their lack of a benefits package and C) if I hadn't been brought to the point of desperation?
Randstad should listen to what the job seekers have to say from the start and not bombard them with the jobs they're desperate to fill so they can make a quick buck. I would have preferred they just tell me that they wouldn't be able to help me.
Preferred solution: I would like to be considered for future, more suitable positions.
User's recommendation: Be firm with Randstad.
Denied an opportunity because of my past when they have workers with the same past

Verified ReviewerMisinformation
My interview was set. Specifically said "we will meet at this address, this time" and received email, and text up to the hour before the scheduled time.
when I showed exactly where I was told to, I was informed the position was filled a week ago, and that Randstad kept sending people to non existent job interviews. I replied to the email explaining i was disappointed and felt my time was wasted. I received a phone call telling me I sent an unprofessional email, and arrived at the wrong location, which was contradictory to the half dozen email and texts I received.
I should have researched more, I was told... by far the worst, most unprofessional business in ANY regard I have ever had to deal with.

This morning, I, too, got a no-show from a recruiter after multiple reminders of the meeting. The no-show was my first experience with Randstad.
I require professionalism from business partners. Goodbye, Randstad.
